These are some of the most frequently asked questions i get from people who are interested in training at South Shore Sportfighting:
--"How Does A Class Work?" Basically a typical class starts out with some warm ups, then the instructor will go over some techniques. You will usuallu partner up with someone and work on the technique. Sometimes we will work on specific drills to practice the techniques. There is always sparring going on. If you are new you will ususally be matched up with a more experienced member of the gym who can work with you and control the pace of the aprring until you learn enough to start sparring full out. There are also always fighters training for their fights so often times the whole class will be involved in training that particular fighter for his specific gameplan.
--"What Do I Wear?" Pretty much regular workout clothes are fine. No sneakers other than wrestling shoes. A cup and a mouth piece are also a good idea.
--"Do I Need Any Equipment?" Most students prefer to buy their own gloves, shinpads, headgear etc. Most of this equipment is for sale at the gym.
--"Am I Too Old?" No. We have a wide age range at SSS. There are many students in their 30's, 40's and even some in their 50's. Everyone has different goals and we cater to them. The typical 45 year old has different goals than a 19 year old kid who wants to be a fighter. At any given time at our gym it is a common site to see everyday "average Joe's" often in their 30's and 40's training alongside and with professional fighters. One of the most in shape students at SSS is 51 years young so the answer is no, you are never too old.
--"Am I Too Out Of Shape?" People tell me all the time that they are planning on joining ther gym, they just have to get in shape first. Huh? Isn't the reason for joining the gym to get in shape? The most difficult part about doing anything, be it going to a gym or changing jobs or whatever is just taking that first step. My advice to people who ask me this question is to just jump in head first. In all my years of being around the fitness industry i have never seen the kind of positive results in fitness that i have seen in my own gym from the training that goes along with mixed martial arts. It is by far the best exercise out there from where i'm standing. As opposed to running endlessly on a treadmill or soem other tedious form of cardio training you will be so pre-occupied with trying to throw that punch properly or work that leg lock correctly that before you know it an hour has gone by and you are sweating your ass off and burning large amounts of calories. I have seen this training change people's lives let alone change their appearance and health. So no you are not too out of shape, everybody starts somewhere and there are always new students joining who will probably be worried about being out of shape at first too.
--"Am I Going To Get Beat Up?" Yes! It's a damn fight gym. No that's not exactly true. No you will not be beaten up. As mentioned before, everybody has different goals. If your goal is to learn some jiu-jitsu and get a great workout then you will probably not be exposed to the type of training that someone who wants to be a competitive fighter will be exposed to. Even so, someone whose goal is to be a fighter one day will not necessarily be thrown to the wolves either. They will be given the proper training and develop the skills they need to endure those types of workouts and when the time is deemed right they will be invited to join in "fight team training" if that's what they wish where they will be beaten up and love it. No matter what your goal is i guarantee that if you stick with this type of training you will begin to thrive on pushing yourself in the gym and the competition you will have in the gym. You will not be beaten up but you will have a whole new respect for the types of things you can put your body through in training and the aches and pains you experience at first will go away as your body adapts to this great style of training.
"I'm Just Starting Out, What Class/Classes Should I Go To?" You can pretty much walk into any class and the particular instructor will see to it that you are instructed accordingly. Sometimes another instructor or more experienced student will work with you. There is almost always more than one beginner level student in any given class so you won't be the only one. At SSS we stress to our students the importance of welcoming in new members and working with them. Years ago before MMA training was really available around here i went to a few different types of schools in the various arts. At best i was literally completely ignored and at worst i felt thretened like these poeple who i was looking to give money to for training resented me for walking into their facility and were about to punch me in the face. At the time i was around 16 or 17 and i remember thinking that if i ever own my own gym some day i will go out of my way to not make people feel that way.
"How Often Should I Attend?" Again, everyone's goals vary but generally i recommend getting to the gym at least 2 or 3 days a week when you are first starting out. This will give you a better chance of retaining the things you are being taught in class.
"Do You Only Train Pro Fighters?" This is one i have just started hearing over the past year or so. I have to attribute it to the rising popularity of MMA these days and the success South Shore Sportfighting has had in competition. The answer is that we train men, women and children from complete beginners to advanced and everything in between. Everyone is welcome at SSS.
"What Styles Do You Teach?" We like to think of our style as Mixed martial Arts, we have one of the most successful MMA teams on the East Coast. We train submission grappling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing and savate. Basically, if something works we will train it. While we do often train those styles sepertately, we are more or less doing it as a means to an end. The end being proficiency in mixed martial arts. When a student becomes proficient in the various forms of combat that make up mixed martial arts he/she will begin training and sparring with everything included.
"What Sets SSS Apart From Other Gyms?" That is a good question. There are many things that set us apart from other MMA gyms. A person should ask around about the reputation of the place they are considering paying for MMA training. Many people don't and just pretty much go to the place closest to them. With the popularity of MMA many schools are popping up. Some are good, some are ok, some are bad.. and some are horrible. In Massachusetts, South Shore Sportfighting was one of the first fight teams on the scene. We have been in business since 2001 and since then have turned out many successful fighters including several local champions in MMA and submission grappling, a veteran of the UFC and the WEC and just signed another fighter to a contract with Showtime with more on the way. We pride ourselves that we have a very well rounded fight team. We were awarded the first ever massmma fight team of the year award for New England in 2006 for our impeccable winning record and complete domination of the World Fighting League's Calloway Cup Tournament in which dozens of fight teams from around New England were pitted against each other. Our record and reputation speaks for itself but there are many other things which sets us apart. We, to the best of my knowledge, are still one of the most highly affordable gyms around for this type of training and with class times 7 days a week often 2 or 3 times per day we provide more available training times than most other gyms. There are also ceratin aspects of the training at SSS which i feel sets us apart. We have been doing this a long time now in this young sport and are very good at what we do whether it is training a fighter for a championship fight, teaching a first time "averag joe" how to defend himself or helping you lose that extra 10 pounds through MMA training. Again our record and reputation speaks for itself so come check us out and see what it's like to train with the best..
